What is International E-Waste Day?\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

International E-Waste Day aims to raise awareness of the issue of e-waste and explores a different theme each year.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This year\u2019s theme focuses on the part each one of us can play in making circularity a reality for e-products. This includes recycling electronics, reusing or repairing them.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Coronavirus pandemic has had a perceptible effect on the use of electronics, with an increase in consumption as people heavily relied on them to keep connected with family, friends and work. It is important that people know the options that exist for their end of life equipment, to avoid it ending up in landfill.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

What is e-waste?\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

E-waste is any electronic item that is nearing the end of its useful life, and is discarded, donated or recycled.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

How does e-waste affect the planet if it isn\u2019t recycled?\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It takes thousands of years for e-waste to decompose and it causes numerous environmental issues, including damage from the leaking of harmful chemicals, the limiting of precious resources and the creation of carbon emissions which contribute to global warming.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The chemicals released when tech is burned pollute the air, while the refrigerants found in temperature exchange equipment are greenhouse gases.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The mining of raw materials for electronics causes a devastating impact on the environment, including habitat destruction and contamination of water and soil. As the demand for electronics is constantly increasing, the situation is only going to get worse.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Mobile Phones are just one form of e-waste and they cannot be made without using valuable materials such as silicon, carbon, calcium, coltan, iron, gold, copper, tin and aluminium.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

If Phones aren\u2019t recycled properly, then the materials can\u2019t be recovered, putting a strain on resources. According to Treehugger<\/a>, for every one million phones recycled, we can recover 75 pounds of gold, 772 pounds of silver, 33 pounds of palladium and 35, 274 pounds of copper.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

If you missed the sculpture in Cornwall or in its second home in Stockport, you can pay Mount Recyclemore a visit at the Eden Project in Cornwall, where it will be for a year.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Our planet vs e-waste<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Since 2015, the amount of e-waste the world has produced is estimated to have increased by 21% and continues to rise! This is due to factors such as lack of options for repair, short replacement cycles and digitisation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

If e-waste continues to rise at this rate, by 2030 the world will produce 35% more than it currently is.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

We\u2019ve estimated that the UK produces 133,141 tonnes of e-waste each month, which is equivalent in weight to 63 London eyes!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n
