This is when movies that are tipped for Oscars (or, more accurately, movies that <i>want<\/i> to be tipped for Oscars) are traditionally released, which is why you see a lot more serious people scratching their chins at the cinema than you do in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>As such, we now have a pretty good idea which films will be up for the illustrious Best Picture gong at next year\u2019s ceremony, which is going to be presented by <i>How I Met Your Mother\u2019s <\/i>Neil Patrick Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Without any further ado, here are the 2015 Best Picture contenders. The final 10 movie shortlist (expanded from 5 after the <a href=\"https:\/\/entertainment.time.com\/2010\/02\/01\/top-10-oscar-nomination-snubs\/slide\/best-picture-the-dark-knight-2008\/\"><i>Great Dark Knight Scandal of 2009<\/i><\/a>) is announced on January 15<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Boyhood<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ys-mbHXyWX4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This coming-of-age drama, which follows a young boy\u2019s progression into manhood, has a massive 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes<\/p>\n<p>Instead of changing actors as his main character got older, Linklater filmed <i>Boyhood<\/i> over the course of 11 years and kept Ellar Coltrane (who was just 6 when he was cast) in the lead role. The sheer audacity of the project should be enough to earn the film a Best Picture nomination.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Inherent Vice<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wZfs22E7JmI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>Inherent Vice <\/i>is an adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Anderson\u2019s films have been nominated for a couple of Oscars in previous years \u201d\u201c with <i>There Will Be Blood<\/i> nominated for Best Picture in 2008 \u201d\u201c although he\u2019s never actually won one of the famous gold statuettes.<\/p>\n<p>With films like <i>There Will Be Blood<\/i>, <i>The Master<\/i>, <i>Boogie Nights<\/i> and <i>Magnolia<\/i> under his belt, it\u2019s probably time he earned a bit more recognition from the Academy.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Gone Girl<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ym3LB0lOJ0o\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>Gone Girl, <\/i>David Fincher\u2019s adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name, was a massive success at the box office, but that\u2019s rarely an indicator of success at the Oscars.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, the film has received excellent reviews too. At 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is Fincher\u2019s 3<sup>rd<\/sup> highest-ranked film after <i>Zodiac <\/i>and <i>The Social Network<\/i> (although, interesting, his only film to win the Best Picture Oscar, <i>The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, <\/i>received just 72%).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Foxcatcher<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8361stZ8n0w\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A barely recognisable Steve Carrell takes on his first major \u201d\u02dcserious\u2019 role in this biopic of John du Pont, a cocaine-addicted millionaire who sets up a training camp for America\u2019s wrestling team.<\/p>\n<p>The story follows Olympic wrestling champion Mark Schultz (played by Channing Tatum), who joins du Pont\u2019s Foxcatcher team along with his brother Dave. Things soon go awry, culminating in (<b>SLIGHT SPOILERS&#8230;<\/b>although it\u2019s based on a real life story) Dave\u2019s murder at the hands of du Pont.<\/p>\n<p>Carrell is a dead cert to be nominated for Best Actor, but the film itself has received a lot of positive attention too. It currently has 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Interstellar<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0vxOhd4qlnA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Surprisingly Easy Guide to Christopher Nolan\u2019s Interstellar\" href=\"http:\/\/192.168.3.178\/2014\/11\/06\/the-surprisingly-easy-guide-to-christopher-nolans-interstellar\/\">Despite the hype<\/a>, Christopher Nolan\u2019s space-drama hasn\u2019t received the warmest critical response.<\/p>\n<p>However, it has received a lot of love from the movie-going public: it currently has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0816692\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">8.8\/10 on IMDB<\/a>, placing it at #12 on the site\u2019s top 250 list.<\/p>\n<p>The cast has a strong Oscar pedigree too. Five of them \u201d\u201c Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Ellen Burstyn and another cast member who we won\u2019t reveal for spoilers-sake \u201d\u201c have won Oscars, while a further three \u201d\u201c Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck and John Lithgow \u201d\u201c have received nominations.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Get On Up<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/guOS6ev6hQ0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>Get On Up, <\/i>a biopic of soul legend James Brown, received a lot of attention due to Chadwick Boseman\u2019s sensational portrayal of the Godfather of Soul.<\/p>\n<p>Boseman (who was <a title=\"Marvel has announced 9 new movies. We hope you like superheroes\u201d\u00a6\" href=\"http:\/\/192.168.3.178\/2014\/10\/29\/marvel-has-announced-9-new-movies-we-hope-you-like-superheroes\/\">recently cast as Marvel superhero Black Panther<\/a>) aside, critical reception to the film has been lukewarm. In an otherwise strong field of candidates, it\u2019s unlikely to get the nod&#8230;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Birdman: or, The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uJfLoE6hanc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This black comedy stars Michael Keaton as a washed-up Hollywood actor who is famous for playing a superhero called Birdman in a series of blockbuster movies (no prizes for guessing the inspiration for this film&#8230;).<\/p>\n<p><i>Birdman<\/i> follows the Keaton\u2019s character as he tried to write, direct and star in a play, despite being flat broke.<\/p>\n<p>With a strong 94% on Rotten Tomatoes to date, <i>Birdman <\/i>is a strong contender for nomination. Comedies, however, rarely win Best Picture&#8230;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>The Theory of Everything<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Salz7uGp72c\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>The Theory of Everything<\/i> tells the tale of Stephen Hawking\u2019s relationship with his ex-wife Jane Wilde Hawking, and is based on Jane\u2019s book <i>Travelling to Infinity. <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Eddie Redmayne has been praised to the sky for his performance as Hawking, and Academy voters have apparently <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2014\/09\/toronto-theory-of-everything-sends-oscar-race-into-early-overdrive-as-tiff-world-premieres-keep-on-coming-831028#u=https:\/\/deadline.com\/2014\/09\/toronto-theory-of-everything-sends-oscar-race-into-early-overdrive-as-tiff-world-prem\">already marked <i>The Theory of Everything<\/i> out as one of the best films this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Mr. Turner<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Tn4zSR_5ioI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Would you look at that? Another biopic! This one concerns British painter J.M.W Turner, an eccentric artist who kept two mistresses and fathered two children (yet denied being their father).<\/p>\n<p>The film has received massive praise, with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Turner\u2019s relative obscurity Stateside may lead to the film missing out on that all important nomination.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Guardians of the Galaxy<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aHUBlv5_K8Y\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>Guardians..<\/i>. was one of the biggest films of 2014, but it\u2019s a massive outsider in the Best Picture race. <i>Avengers Assemble<\/i>, a very similar movie from the same studio, received just one Oscar nomination despite breaking all kinds of box office records.<\/p>\n<p>Still, this could be the year the Academy finally decides to recognise the massive popularity of superhero films by nominating one for Best Picture.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1Fg5iWmQjwk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This well-received Wes Anderson comedy is another outsider, but it\u2019d be nice to see Anderson acknowledged for his stellar work in the industry. He\u2019s never had a film nominated for the main prize, although he has been nominated for Best Screenplay twice.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Unbroken<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XrjJbl7kRrI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>Unbroken<\/i> hasn\u2019t been released yet, so it\u2019s something of a dark horse. No-one is sure how good it\u2019ll be.<\/p>\n<p>It seems to have everything it takes to earn a nomination though, with a strong story of American heroism and Angelina Jolie in her first directorial role.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s based on the war experiences of Louis Zamperini (played by Jack O\u2019Connell, better known as Cook from <i>Skins<\/i>), an Olympic hero who spent 47 days on a raft in the Pacific Ocean after a plane crash before spending a further 2 years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>The Imitation Game<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S5CjKEFb-sM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This biopic (!) of Alan Turing, the man who helped win World War 2 by cracking Nazi Germany\u2019s Enigma Code, has been receiving a lot of attention thanks to <a href=\"\u201d\u00a2%09https:\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/the-imitation-game-film-review-benedict-cumberbatch-set-for-oscar-nod-as-alan-turing-9719177.html\">Benedict Cumberbatch\u2019s brilliant performance. Will it be enough to earn the film a Best Picture nomination though?<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Which of this year\u2019s films would you like to see win the Best Picture Oscar?
