Of course, the best film doesn\u2019t always win the Best Picture award, as the films in this post show!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>The Shawshank Redemption<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6hB3S9bIaco\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/chart\/top\">number one film on IMDB\u2019s Top 250<\/a>. It came 4th in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/500\/96.asp\">Empire\u2019s Best Movies of All Time<\/a>. And yet, <i>The Shawshank Redemption<\/i> didn\u2019t even win a single Oscar, let alone Best Picture.<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, it came up against a tough field. <i>Forrest Gump <\/i>took home the big prize, while <i>Pulp Fiction <\/i>and <i>Four Weddings and a Funeral<\/i> were among the other nominees. But still! It\u2019s <i>The <\/i>flippin\u2019 <i>Shawshank Redemption<\/i>!<\/p>\n<p>It turns out we\u2019re not the only ones a bit upset by this sorry state of affairs; Sky viewers voted it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/filmandtv\/news\/-the-shawshank-redemption-voted-greatest-film-to-l\/295870\">the best movie never to win Best Picture in a 2011 poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Anything by Martin Scorsese<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qo5jJpHtI1Y\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s astounding that Martin Scorsese, one of the best directors of all time, has never won a Best Picture Oscar. <i>Goodfellas<\/i> was whacked by <i>Dances With Wolves<\/i>. <i>Taxi Driver<\/i>, beaten on points by <i>Rocky<\/i>. <i>Raging Bull<\/i>, knocked out by <i>Ordinary People<\/i>. <i>Wolf of Wall Street<\/i>, outfoxed by <i>12 Years a Slave<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest insult of them all, however, is <i>Gangs of New York<\/i> losing out to <i>Chicago<\/i>. We know it\u2019s not Marty\u2019s best film but come on! <i>Chicago?!<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>The Dark Knight<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yQ5U8suTUw0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>We know the Academy doesn\u2019t really like blockbusters. But <i>The Dark Knight<\/i> was different: it was an intelligent blockbuster that reflected on morality and surveillance. It had something to say (plus lots of good action sequences). In hindsight, it\u2019s probably the reason 2 million superhero films are coming out over the next couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t even get a nomination. The backlash from the snub is frequently cited\u00a0as the reason the Academy <a href=\"https:\/\/entertainment.time.com\/2010\/02\/01\/top-10-oscar-nomination-snubs\/slide\/best-picture-the-dark-knight-2008\/\">expanded the number of Best Picture nominations from 5 to 10<\/a> (it&#8217;s now back down to 8), although its never been officially confirmed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lnSgSe2GzDc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This daring and highly original take on romance and technology is widely considered to be one of the best films of the past 15 years. Not only was it snubbed for Best Picture, it didn&#8217;t even get nominated: it\u00a0missed out to <i>Million Dollar Baby, Ray, Sideways<\/i>, <i>The Aviator<\/i> and <i>Finding Neverland<\/i>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Citizen Kane<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zyv19bg0scg\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>Citizen Kane<\/i> is one of the best films of all time (it topped<i> Sight and Sound\u2019s <\/i>Poll of Critics\u2019 5 years in a row), which&#8230;well, you know the rest. It lost out to <i>How Green Was My Valley<\/i>, although it\u2019s had such an influence on modern film-making that it doesn\u2019t really matter.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Fargo<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h2tY82z3xXU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Coen Brothers\u2019 classic crime dramedy did better than most of the films in this post, managing to secure a nomination. Unfortunately, it was beaten by <i>The English Patient<\/i>. We\u2019re sure the Coens\u2019 don\u2019t lose much sleep over it though, as legendary critic Roger Ebert once called <i>Fargo<\/i> one of his favourite films ever.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Which films do you think should have won Best Picture?
