There really is no better way to unwind than attempting to kill your fellow gamers before getting shot down by a squeaky-voiced preteen with an unusually broad swearing vocabulary.

Fortunately, the PS4 and Xbox One have all kinds of FPS treats on offer – but which is the best? We decided to take a look.

Battlefield Hardline

The military is so last year. 2015’s Battlefield instalment focuses on cops and robbers, pitting the two against each other in a series of tight street battles over drugs and other naughtiness.

This shift in focus means Hardline offers a slightly different experience to your standard FPS, with smaller maps and new game modes based on apprehending robbers as they try to carry out a heist (and vice versa).

It certainly won’t be for everyone, but Hardline is a nice change for people who don’t want to stray too far from the comfort of Battlefield’s military-based fun.

Battlefield 4

Battlefield 4 is military warfare for the tactics connoisseur, demanding teamwork and planning to achieve victory. In return, it lets you command tanks and helicopters and bear witness to some weirdly beautiful environmental destruction.

The enhanced specs of the PS4 and Xbox One means Battlefield 4 is even bigger than its predecessor, with the potential to play epic 64 player matches. If big battles are your kind of thing, Battlefield will be right up your street.

If you prefer quick run-and-gun gameplay, however, the slower pace of Battlefield may not appeal. The campaign is pretty weak too.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

At this point, most people know whether or not they like Call of Duty and Advanced Warfare is unlikely to change anyone’s opinion either way. It’s pretty much more of the same.

There are a couple of key differences though, with the introduction of an exo-suit that allows you to boost-jump and sprint faster the main one.

Of course, there’s not a lot that can be done about Call of Duty’s biggest problem; other players. People still exploit the game for all its worth and will still swear at you like a sailor who’s stubbed his toe if you dare to ruin their game in any way. But it’s all part of the experience, we suppose!

It’s probably worth bearing in mind that a new COD will be out in 8 months’ time too…

Tired of your console? Just click below to get an instant value for it!

Sell PS4 | Sell Xbox One

Destiny

The most expensive game ever made is…well, a little underwhelming to be honest. It’s essentially Halo mixed with Warcraft, with players embarking on various quests to gather various trinkets that’ll make their player slightly more powerful.

And yet, it’s scarily addictive ”“ especially if you’ve got a few friends willing to play it often as well. The story is fairly poor, the deathmatch modes aren’t as good as COD or Battlefield and the raids and missions can be fairly dull too; yet you won’t be able to stop. We haven’t decided whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing yet.

Titanfall

Titanfall was hyped to the heavens before its release but seems to have disappeared from the public consciousness with little more than a wimper.

It’s a shame, really, because Titanfall is a uniquely brilliant game. You control either a pilot, a nimble little fella with guns and sweet parkour skills, or a Titan, an armed-to-the-teeth robotic behemoth, with the ability to switch between the two mid-match.

Unfortunately, the game just doesn’t seem to have caught on. The abuse of the overpowered smart pistol might explain that slightly or perhaps it’s just too different from the comforts of Call of Duty; either way, the servers are a lot quieter than other games in the genre. It’s still worth checking out though.

Evolve

Evolve pits 4 players controlling hunters against 1 player controlling a ridiculously powerful monster. However, that monster starts off weak and gradually gets more powerful, meaning the player controlling the monster has to bide their time until they’re strong enough to attack.

Evolve is an FPS that values tactics and teamwork over all else, even more than so than Battlefield. As such, it’s not quite as exciting as Call of Duty but it is a lot more rewarding. The unique setting makes a nice change from smouldering warzones too.

Which is your favourite next-gen FPS?
