This week, however, we’ve decided to highlight an app designed to improve the lives of others: ShareTheMeal.

What is it?

The concept behind ShareTheMeal is simple yet wonderful: you tap a button and a hungry child receives a meal.

It’s one of the latest initiatives from the United Nations’ World Food Programme, which was set-up to combat world hunger.

Each meal costs just 35p. Once you’ve registered, you’re able to donate with a single tap.

Each donation goes towards a meal for one of the 20,000 Syrian children displaced by war and in refugee camps in Jordan. The aim is to provide at least a year’s worth of meals through the app.

An earlier version of the app launched in Germany, Austria and Switzerland provided 1.8 million meals for children in Lesotho.

Why is surprisingly easy?

A single tap is all it takes to donate. You can donate as you sit down for lunch or dinner, before you go to work or even just before bed. You can donate as many times as you like too.

The WFP claims that the world’s 2 billion smartphone users outnumber starving children by 20 to 1, so the potential impact of just a small percentage of those smartphone users donating could be huge.

The best bit

Once you’ve made your donation, the app will show you where your meal has been distributed and the impact it has.
