But which films did the UK public see most? We used box office data from the BFI to find out&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(P.S: we know there\u2019s a certain film with lightsabers in it around the corner, and we know that\u2019s probably going to smash pretty much every film in this list (apart from #1, maybe) into little pieces. We\u2019ll update the list when those figures &#8211; and figures for <em>The Hunger Games <\/em>&amp; <em>The Good Dinosaur<\/em> &#8211; are released!).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>1st: SPECTRE <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z4UDNzXD3qA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Box Office Gross: \u00a388 million (to date)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No surprises here. <em>SPECTRE<\/em> broke a ridiculous amount of box office records, including the biggest opening day record by taking a jaw-dropping \u00a36.3 million.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t manage to outperform <em>Skyfall <\/em>though, which remains the UK\u2019s highest-grossing movie of all time. <em>SPECTRE<\/em> is currently 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, behind <em>Avatar<\/em> AKA the film everyone went to see but has since forgotten about.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>2nd: Jurassic World<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RFinNxS5KN4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Box Office Gross: \u00a364.1 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like its dinosaur stars, everyone presumed <em>Jurassic Park <\/em>was dead and buried. It turns out everyone underestimated the combined power of Chris Pratt, velociraptors and <em>that <\/em>theme song.<\/p>\n<p>While it banked \u00a320 million less than <em>SPECTRE, Jurassic World <\/em>is still the 8<sup>th<\/sup> highest-grossing film in UK history. It\u2019s also the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, behind (you guessed it) <em>Avatar<\/em>. Seriously, does anyone remember what happened in that film?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>3rd: Avengers: Age of Ultron<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rD8lWtcgeyg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Box Office Gross: \u00a348.3 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In January, we would have put good money on this being the highest-grossing film of the year and possibly one of the highest grossing films of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Iron Man and co had to make do with 3<sup>rd<\/sup> place. Are people finally getting bored of superheroes? Don\u2019t count on it: we reckon 2016 is a straight shoot-out between <em>Batman vs Superman <\/em>and <em>Captain America: Civil War<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>4th: Minions <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wfql_DoHRKc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Box Office Gross: \u00a346.3 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It turns out that everyone\u2019s favourite gibberish-spouting sidekicks don\u2019t need Gru after all, because their solo film made more than both <em>Despicable Me <\/em>movies. It also had the biggest UK opening ever for an animated film, beating out <em>Toy Story 3<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably made more money from merchandise and inspired more Facebook memes than any of the other films in this post too.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Joint 5th: Fast &amp; Furious 7<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5FhAHe9Uz1s\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Box Office Gross: \u00a338.3 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At one point, it looked like <em>Fast &amp; Furious 7 <\/em>might be the highest grossing film of the year which would have been a huge surprise.<\/p>\n<p>As it happened, it had to settle with being the highest grossing film in the franchise. Considering it\u2019s the 7<sup>th<\/sup> film in the series, that\u2019s an amazing achievement!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Joint 5<sup>th<\/sup>: Inside Out<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/seMwpP0yeu4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Box Office Gross: \u00a338.3 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019d have thought that a film about the inside of a little girl\u2019s head could become one of the biggest films of the year? Pixar, that\u2019s who \u201d\u201c and as always, they were right.<\/p>\n<p>Unbelievably, this is the only \u201d\u02dcoriginal\u2019 film (i.e not based on something else) in the top ten. It\u2019s also the best-reviewed film in the list, with many critics considering it the best Pixar movie to date.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>6<sup>th<\/sup>: Fifty Shades of Grey<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SfZWFDs0LxA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Box Office Gross: \u00a334.6 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/books\/booknews\/9459779\/50-Shades-of-Grey-is-best-selling-book-of-all-time.html\">the bestselling book of all time<\/a>, but <em>Fifty Shades <\/em>the movie was only the 6<sup>th<\/sup> highest-grossing film of the year.<\/p>\n<p>We say \u201d\u02dconly\u2019: it was still a huge success despite some bad reviews, and more or less guaranteed that the next two books will be made into films too. Housewives, rejoice!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>7<sup>th<\/sup>: Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MyqZf8LiWvM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Box Office Gross: \u00a324.6 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the surprise hit of the year, <em>Home <\/em>is an animated family comedy starring Jim Parsons (AKA Sheldon from <em>The Big Bang Theory<\/em>) as an alien on the run from his own kind (who have invaded Earth), and Rihanna as the girl who finds him (she also recorded a soundtrack).<\/p>\n<p>Despite some average reviews, <em>Home<\/em> managed to become the third highest-grossing animation of the year in the UK, although Pixar\u2019s latest <em>The Good Dinosaur<\/em> could well steal that crown before 2015 ends.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>8<sup>th<\/sup>: The Martian<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ej3ioOneTy8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Box Office Gross: \u00a323.3 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Matt Damon and Ridley Scott are big names in the world of cinema, so it\u2019s no surprise that <em>The Martian <\/em>was one of the biggest movies of the year.<\/p>\n<p>What is surprising is just how successful it was: it was the biggest UK opening ever for both Damon and Scott, which is no mean feat considering the films it beat include <em>Alien<\/em>, <em>Blade Runner <\/em>and <em>The Borne Supremacy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>9<sup>th<\/sup>: The Theory of Everything <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Salz7uGp72c\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Box Office Gross: \u00a321.2 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The only purely British film on the list (<em>SPECTRE <\/em>is a UK\/US co-production), <em>The Theory of Everything\u2019s <\/em>amazing box office takings were no doubt helped by the Oscar-nominated performances of Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking and Felicity Jones as his wife Jane.<\/p>\n<p>Redmayne later went on to win the Best Actor Oscar, no doubt sparking a triumphant march to the cinema for many British moviegoers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Which film did you enjoy most this year?
