Most range from the average to the awful (we\u2019re looking at you, <em>Superman 64<\/em>), although there are a select amazing few. Here are our favourites from over the years.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uPnTSvX86Dw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Batman: Arkham Asylum<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Everyone wants to be Batman, but no-one has the money, intellect or reckless abandon to actually be him in real life. Step forward, video games.<\/p>\n<p><em>Arkham Asylum <\/em>is the closest you\u2019ll ever get to being Batman and it\u2019s awesome. You feel like a genius solving mysteries with Detective Mode. You feel like a ninja taking down criminals from the shadows. You feel like a kung-fu master beating up a group of villains. You feel like Batman.<\/p>\n<p>The plot is great too, with some of Batman\u2019s best enemies cropping up for a spot of fisticuffs. The Scarecrow levels are a particular highlight.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pdtRJTMkZvc\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Viewtiful Joe<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019ve never heard of <em>Viewtiful Joe<\/em>, you\u2019re not alone. It was first released on the Gamecube, which has an almost Dreamcast level of groundbreaking games that no-one played. Although it was actually released on PS2 a year later, so you don\u2019t really have an excuse.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, <em>Joe <\/em>is a side-scrolling beat-em-up in which you can slow down time, speed it up and generally use your superpowers to pulverise baddies on your way to saving your girlfriend. It\u2019s like <em>Streets of Rage <\/em>dragged into the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century and given a shot of adrenaline to the heart.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also <em>ridiculously <\/em>hard, boasting some of the toughest bosses in any video game. <em>Dark Souls <\/em>is a picnic in comparison.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/67RWEWEQPAg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lego Marvel Superheroes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Lego makes everything better, including superheroes. This blocky take on the Avengers is similar to the <em>Lego Star Wars <\/em>games, with the same quirky humour and simple-but-enjoyable gameplay. There are loads of characters to choose from too.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a bit silly but then again, a bunch of men and women running around in tight trousers and capes is a bit silly, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rEZQdtXPRJQ\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Batman Returns<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There was a simple formula for making superhero games back in the day: take <em>Final Fight <\/em>and chuck in a superhero as the main character.<\/p>\n<p><em>Batman Returns <\/em>is a game about punching baddies in the face and driving the Batmobile until the end credits. Crimes are investigated and solved purely through the power of your fists and the accelerator of your vehicle. There\u2019s no subtlety here, and that\u2019s why we love it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Rivdr8Uz9tM?si=wWBay36bQEhqabhd\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>More side-scrolling fun, this time with everyone\u2019s favourite pizza munching turtles.<\/p>\n<p><em>Turtles in Time <\/em>was released on the SNES way back in 1992 but still looks fantastic to this day. Like <em>Batman Returns<\/em>, the only real objective is to punch your way through time \u201d\u201c including the Wild West and space \u201d\u201c to retrieve the Statue of Liberty, which has been stolen by Krang.<\/p>\n<p>The most groundbreaking innovation of all, however, was the ability to throw baddies <em>at <\/em>the screen. No matter how many times you do it, it never gets old.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LzbjZEfTz1w\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>X-Men: The Arcade Game<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Oh yeah, it\u2019s another side-scrolling beat-em-up, because side-scrolling beat-em-ups are the best kind of games. Please make more, game people.<\/p>\n<p><em>X-Men <\/em>lets you play as one of <em>six<\/em> X-Men, which is nice even though you\u2019ll pick Wolverine every time. Your mission from them on is to beat seven bells\u00a0out of everything in sight until you reach Magneto\u2019s secret lair to administer another kicking.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, you had to huddle six of your mates around an arcade screen until one of them inevitably got battered within the first 5 minutes. Fortunately, the 2010 Xbox and PS3 port let you play with other people online.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BiOnsXp9aGQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The name says it all: you are The Incredible Hulk and your job is to cause ULTIMATE DESTRUCTION.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, that\u2019s about it. You get dropped into a city and you run around smashing stuff up. You can buy new moves, sneak into bases using a truck as a disguise and even wrestle jets, but the main objective is still the same: smash loads of stuff up. What more could you want from a Hulk game?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GRMAtMg06xk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Marvel Ultimate Alliance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Before everyone and their dog knew the entire history of the Marvel universe, <em>Ultimate Alliance <\/em>was one of the few ways for non-comic readers to wise up on the convoluted mythology of Iron Man and co.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ultimate Alliance <\/em>is an action RPG in which you control a superhero and team up with other superheroes to fight baddies, collect loot and gain XP. It\u2019s basically <em>Diablo <\/em>with more Wolverine, and is every bit as good as that sounds.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uHWo-5A46rg\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Punisher<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There have been 3 <em>Punisher <\/em>movies and they\u2019ve mostly failed to capture the unique charm of the character. This game, however, captures him <em>perfectly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a bit like <em>Max Payne<\/em>, with lots of shootouts and lots of fighting. You can also interrogate enemies, which is where things get extra <em>Punisher-<\/em>y with the ability to torture people with drills and sharks (yes, sharks).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s horribly violent but disturbingly fun. Thomas Jane does a great job as the voice of the Punisher too.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FX8oB68O1ms\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Spider-Man 2<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Imagine <em>Grand Theft Auto <\/em>with Spider-Man as the main character. You don\u2019t have to! <em>Spider-Man 2<\/em> is that game, giving the players to swing around Manhattan as they play.
