{"id":6371,"date":"2016-08-19T10:23:05","date_gmt":"2016-08-19T10:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/192.168.3.178\/?p=6371"},"modified":"2017-01-20T15:54:35","modified_gmt":"2017-01-20T15:54:35","slug":"are-you-david-brent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/08\/19\/are-you-david-brent\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Five: Are you David Brent?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone\u2019s favourite terrible boss and master of cringe David Brent is back, this time on the big screen in <em>Life on The Road<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving Slough\u2019s premier paper merchants Wernham Hogg, Brent decides to pursue his dream of becoming a music megastar (whilst working as a cleaning products sales rep on the side) by taking 11 days holiday to tour some of Reading\u2019s biggest venues with his band Foregone Conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>A big part of Brent\u2019s appeal is the fact we all know someone like him&#8230; and the fact that some of us are more like him than we\u2019d like to think. To celebrate Brent\u2019s return, here\u2019s a quick checklist of signs that you may have turned into Slough\u2019s favourite chilled out entertainer.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Work is an excuse to try new comedic material<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/gFUFh8VSI9cfS\" width=\"480\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/series-2-gFUFh8VSI9cfS\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some people walk into work and see colleagues (or friends, if you\u2019re lucky). You walk in and see an audience primed and ready to hear your latest material, which includes impressions from <em>Mrs Brown\u2019s Boys\u00a0<\/em>and misjudged jokes that may land you in hot water with HR.<\/p>\n<p>If someone was to ask you to describe your role in the office, you\u2019d classify yourself thusly: \u201ca friend first, boss second and chilled out entertainer third\u201d\u009d. This nugget of wisdom from the Brentmeister General might as well be etched on your gravestone: \u201c\u201cWhen people say to me: would you rather be thought of as a funny man or a great boss? My answer\u2019s always the same; to me, they\u2019re not mutually exclusive.\u201d\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The worst thing you can imagine is someone not finding your material funny or being outshone by someone better looking and naturally funnier than you (see: Brent vs Neil, manager of the Swindon branch).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>You think this is a pretty good dance move<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/CruELm2SpceIM\" width=\"480\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/the-office-bbc-ricky-gervais-CruELm2SpceIM\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve sort of fused Flashdance with MC Hammer s**t\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>You\u2019re awful with the opposite sex<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If your interactions with members of the opposite sex always end in abject embarrassment or outright disaster, you might want to look in the mirror and check you haven\u2019t sprouted a naff goatee and paunch.<\/p>\n<p>Among Brent\u2019s finest moments with the ladies include a series of horrific blind dates and some truly cringeworthy attempts to impress his new PA, including describing his cultured drink choices (\u201cMe: lager. Finchy: lager. Gareth: lager, sometimes cider\u201d\u009d) and showing off his football skills, which end with him stumbling over a stepover and planting his noggin right in her face.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2DV87F8wTt0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>You\u2019re a champion of equality<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XmTV62mE1PA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Say what you will about David Brent, but his dedication to promoting equality cannot be disputed.<\/p>\n<p>His finest achievements in this field include writing the politically-charged reggae classic <em>Equality Street <\/em>(sample lyric: \u201cOh dayo, dayo, dayo, me say dayo, biddly biddly biddly biddly biddly biddly bong, yo!\u201d\u009d), becoming a feminist after someone photoshops his head onto a rude picture and helping a disabled woman down the stairs during a fire alarm (and leaving her halfway because it wasn\u2019t a real fire).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>You\u2019re a (terrible) artist at heart\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/Hf9RZEpEPwaL6\" width=\"480\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/the-office-david-brent-Hf9RZEpEPwaL6\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Work is just a means to fund your real passion: art in all its forms.
