This year has taken many victims, celebrity and sadly, civilian too. It has left us with fingers-crossed that 2017 restores some order politically, socially and artistically.<\/p>\n<p>What cannot be said, however, is that 2016 underperformed musically. In the last twelve months, so much flawless music has been produced that it almost balances the scale. Almost. But this year has shown her to be more than a beloved celebrity; her Super Bowl performance and powerful music videos have seen her named 2016\u2019s most charitable celebrity for her work in support of the social justice movement Black Lives Matter and for gender equality.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lemonade<\/em> shows Beyonc\u00c3\u00a9 using her platform to bring light to a variety of causes including representation of black women in popular culture, the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, and gender equality. Now known as Blood Orange, Hynes\u2019 isn\u2019t only a successful singer\/songwriter, but a composer, producer, and even author. It was an unexpected move, but has turned heads and brought deserved attention to the musical fruits of what had been a five year drought.<\/p>\n<p>For those who became fans after <em>For Emma, Forever Ago<\/em>, Justin Vernon\u2019s voice is still as beautiful and emotional but is made even more \u201d\u02dcotherworldly\u2019 and ethereal with some electronic instrumentation and warped, layered vocals. It is a perfectly wintery song, and part of a delicate, melancholy album full of angelic guitar melody and subtly assertive lyricism. Released two days before his death, it is a beautiful culmination of an incredible career. The title track <em>Blackstar<\/em> is the swan song of a man with undeniable talent who made an inconceivable contribution to music, the arts and British culture.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/store\/products\/boniver22amillion-00b52412-aca1-42de-a7a6-f7f37beec5fa\">Buy\u00a0<em>Blackstar\u00a0<\/em>on CD<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Bottomless Pit &#8211; Death Grips<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6791\" src=\"http:\/\/192.168.3.178\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/death-grips.jpg\" alt=\"Bottomless Pit - Death Grips\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/death-grips.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/death-grips-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/death-grips-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cited as an influence on Bowie\u2019s <em>Blackstar<\/em>, Canadian duo Death Grips bring together punk and hip-hop to make more of the fearless alchemy that fans have been hooked on since their first studio album <em>The Money Store<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>MC Ride&#8217;s bleak, cryptic lyrics and dynamic rapping style feels almost like spoken word. When added to the unique synthesized hip-hop backing and Zach Hill\u2019s unconventional drumming, it is a recipe for music so exciting it is frightening.<\/p>\n<p><em>Bottomless Pit<\/em> won\u2019t be everyone\u2019s cup of tea, but after seeing one of their intense live performances at Manchester\u2019s Academy in October this year, I can personally vouch for how much they deserve to be on this list. Their first album <em>Be Slowly<\/em> had a youthful first-love feel, and showed great potential. The band\u2019s progression and new maturity is clear from tracks like <em>Just A Boy<\/em> and <em>17<\/em>, that certainly live up to the aspirations fans and critics alike had for Jaws. The 15-track album features guest contributions from the likes of Craig David, AlunaGeorge and BadBadNotGood amongst others, and was named as the winner of the 2016 Polaris Music Prize four months after it\u2019s release. Released on 21 October by Columbia Records, the album was produced by his son Adam Cohen but created while Cohen was dying and focuses on death, God, and humour.<\/p>\n<p>In the final years of his life, due to Cohen&#8217;s limited mobility, <em>You Want It Darker<\/em> was recorded in the living room of his LA home and then e-mailed to collaborators for editing and input. It is &#8220;a little bit more sparse and acoustic&#8221; than his earlier albums, but made spot number three on the Independent\u2019s Best Albums 2016. After taking a break from music, Cave sought solace from losing his son in late 2015 in the making of this album. The Guardian writes that \u201cNick Cave gently counsels against linking the contents of the former too closely with the latter.\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n<p>Lyrics that were written by Cave before the trauma become his own exploration into the grief and the afterlife. The final lyric \u201cIt\u2019s all right now\u201d\u009d, may be the end of a heart-wrenching album but not closure to his painful soul searching. Surface level, these anti-authority rap beats are about distrust and independence and there\u2019s no coded double-meaning. The single from the album <em>That\u2019s Not Me<\/em>, where the self-critical rapper laughs off the \u201cself-aggrandizing swagger\u201d\u009d that grime is known for. The band have been likened to the Cocteau Twins and Siouxsie and the Banshees, but delicately brought into the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent album from the Californian girl-band flaunts their music to a wider fan base, as they have garnered a little more fame over here in the UK in the recent years.
