Snake (Metal Gear)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Approx sales: 49.2 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sneaking in at number 10 is stealth master Solid\/Old\/Punished Venom Snake (or whatever he\u2019s called this week).<\/p>\n<p>Although Snake is technically two characters (Big Boss and his clone Solid Snake), we\u2019ve combined the sales of the <em>Metal Gear <\/em>games they appear in seeing as they look and sound the same (well, apart from <em>Metal Gear Solid V&#8230;<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Snake\u2019s most recent outing, <em>Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain<\/em>, is the best selling entry in the MGS series with over 6 million copies sold.<\/p>\n<p>It may well be his last official outing too, with <em>Metal Gear <\/em>mastermind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2015\/12\/16\/10220356\/hideo-kojima-konami-explainer-metal-gear-solid-silent-hills\">Hideo Kojima departing Konami<\/a> (who own the <em>Metal Gear<\/em> name) to work on the cryptic <em>Death Stranding<\/em> and Konami choosing to release the already-controversial multiplayer survival action game <em>Metal Gear Survive<\/em>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/192.168.3.178\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Crash_Bandicoot-800x450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7514\" src=\"http:\/\/192.168.3.178\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Crash_Bandicoot-800x450.jpg\" alt=\"Crash Bandicoot\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Crash_Bandicoot-800x450.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Crash_Bandicoot-800x450-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Crash_Bandicoot-800x450-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>9. Crash Bandicoot<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Approx sales: 50 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyone\u2019s favourite spinning marsupial (sorry, Taz&#8230;) introduced a generation of gamers to the wonders of 3D platforming in the 90s and, at one point, he was arguably more popular than a certain Italian plumber.<\/p>\n<p>The first game in the series, made by Naughty Dog, sold over 6.8 million copies worldwide, while the second and third sold 5.17 million and 5.7 million units respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the series\u2019 popularity took a massive hit after Naughty Dog fulfilled their three game contract and sales slipped dramatically. Donkey Kong<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Approx sales: 56.04 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Donkey Kong began life as an extremely angry individual who kidnapped princesses and threw barrels at the plumbers who tried to save them.<\/p>\n<p>DK\u2019s redemption began with 1994\u2019s <em>Donkey Kong Country, <\/em>an innovative platformer in which the previously furious ape attempted to liberate a stash of bananas with his lovable nephew Diddy. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Approx sales: 58 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Released in 1996, <em>Tomb Raider<\/em> sold over 6 million copies. Most of that success can be attributed to its main character, Lara Croft.<\/p>\n<p>Lara Croft, a female adventurer as drawn by a teenage boy, was a bona-fide cultural phenomenon in the 90s. Master Chief (Halo)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Approx sales: 65 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Master Chief isn\u2019t the most charismatic of characters, essentially acting as a vessel for players as they jump and shoot their way through the galaxy. But somehow, despite his lack of face or real name, the Chief has won the hearts of gamers everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the love for Chief is so strong that even the current developers of the series, 343 Industries, underestimated it; they recently admitted that leaving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/articles\/2017-04-26-halo-5s-lack-of-master-chief-was-a-huge-disappointment-343-admits\">Chief out of most of <em>Halo 5<\/em>\u2019s campaign was a \u201chuge disappointment\u201d\u009d for fans<\/a> and the reaction taught them that \u201che\u2019s slightly more important now than he has ever been\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n<p>To date, Chief\u2019s high point is <em>Halo 3<\/em>. Michael, Franklin and Trevor (Grand Theft Auto V)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Approx sales: 75 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unlike the other characters in this post, Michael, Franklin and Trevor have only starred in one game&#8230; but it\u2019s a big one.<\/p>\n<p><em>Grand Theft Auto V <\/em>is one of the biggest selling games of all time, shifting just over 75 million copies since it\u2019s 2013 release. Link (The Legend of Zelda)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Approx sales: 84.9 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every <em>Zelda<\/em> game has roughly the same plot: a man in a green tunic explores a series of dungeons, gathers various context-sensitive equipment and saves a princess by fighting a bloke called Ganon (or some variation of that name).<\/p>\n<p>And yet, Link (who rarely talks or shows signs of a personality) remains one of gaming\u2019s most popular characters thanks to Nintendo\u2019s remarkable ability to twist the standard <em>Zelda<\/em> template in all kinds of weird and wonderful ways.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, we\u2019ve seen Link sail the high seas, command time with a woodwind instrument and, most recently, explore a huge open world that is somehow more interesting that any open world before it.<\/p>\n<p>The current series best seller is the Wii\u2019s <em>Twilight Princess<\/em>, with 8.58 million copies sold, but the incredible <em>Breath of the Wild <\/em>could well beat that once the cost of the Nintendo Switch drops (it\u2019s currently at 2.7 million).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/192.168.3.178\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Sonic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7535\" src=\"http:\/\/192.168.3.178\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Sonic.jpg\" alt=\"Sonic The Hedgehog\" width=\"800\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Sonic.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Sonic-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.musicmagpie.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Sonic-768x433.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>3. Sonic The Hedgehog<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Approx sales: 150 million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even though he hasn\u2019t starred in a blockbuster game since the early 00s, Sonic remains one of gaming\u2019s most popular characters.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the speedy blue hedgehog\u2019s success came early in his career, with the first three games in the series shifting 23.9 million, 6 million and 1.2 million copies respectively.<\/p>\n<p>After a brief period in the wilderness, Sonic came back with a bang with the <em>Sonic Adventure <\/em>series. The first game sold 4.5 million copies across the Dreamcast and Gamecube, while the second sold around 3.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the <em>Sonic<\/em> games released since then have received mixed reviews, leading to a gradual decline in the character\u2019s popularity. Everywhere you looked, Pikachu and pals were there; cards, a TV show, a couple of movies \u201d\u201c the list goes on.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Pok\u00c3\u00a9mon <\/em>craze eventually died down, but the video games that inspired it remain hugely popular. The original <em>Red\/Blue\/Green\/Yellow <\/em>games, which sold over 59 million copies combined, are still the pinnacle of the series, but even the most recent <em>Sun and Moon <\/em>sold over 15.4 million copies (and counting).<\/p>\n<p><em>Pok\u00c3\u00a9mon <\/em>has inspired a few successful spin-offs too, including <em>Pok\u00c3\u00a9mon Stadium <\/em>and <em>Snap<\/em>, sending the franchise\u2019s total sales to a hugely impressive 294 million.<\/p>\n<p>If we\u2019d included free app downloads in our count, <em>Pok\u00c3\u00a9mon <\/em>would have won by a landslide thanks to <em>Pok\u00c3\u00a9mon Go<\/em>. Mario is largely responsible for the rise of video games in the West, with <em>Super Mario Bros <\/em>(40 million copies sold) helping the NES become a huge success in the US &amp; UK.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Mario has starred in a ridiculous number of games. He headlines five different series, including the hugely popular <em>Mario Kart <\/em>(114 million sold to date) and <em>Mario Party <\/em>(41 million to date).<\/p>\n<p>Unlike many of the characters in this post, Mario\u2019s popularity has sustained over the years too. He appears in 3 of the top 10 best selling games of all time, 4 of the top 20 and 8 of the top 50.
