It\u2019s a question that has taxed generations but now, thanks to the power of the internet, we may finally have the answer.<\/p>\n<p>We took 28 of the most popular Christmas films and used their scores on Rotten Tomatoes (both critics and user) and IMDB to calculate an overall average score.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the top ten. Did your favourite make the cut?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>10. Elf<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Overall: 78.7%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gW9wRNqQ_P8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Buddy the Elf has become synonymous with Christmas, providing the face for a million memes about how close Christmas is and how excited people are about that fact.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s a little surprising that <em>Elf<\/em>, arguably the most popular modern Christmas film, has only just snuck into the top ten. It\u2019s mainly due to the lukewarm reviews it received upon release in 2003, although repeated showings on Channel 4 and later Sky have cemented its place as a Christmas classic.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>9. Gremlins<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Overall: 79.2%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XBEVwaJEgaA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Gremlins <\/em>is the tale of a boy who gets a cute little mogwai named Gizmo for Christmas. Gizmo is pretty easy to look after; just don\u2019t get him wet, don\u2019t expose him to bright light and don\u2019t feed him after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, said boy breaks all the rules (albeit accidentally) and all hell breaks loose. A cautionary tale for anyone thinking of buying their child a pet this Christmas.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>8. White Christmas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Overall: 79.5%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3n3-UtakD3I\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although the song is more famous, Bing Crosby\u2019s classic Christmas caper is a staple in some households over the festive period.<\/p>\n<p>It sees Bing and Danny Kaye, a successful ex-military song-and-dance duo, team up with a couple of dancing sisters to save the Columbia Inn operated by their ex-general.<\/p>\n<p><em>White Christmas<\/em> hasn\u2019t aged <em>that <\/em>well, but it\u2019s a good watch if you want to add a little old school Hollywood glamour to your Christmas celebrations.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>7. Arthur Christmas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Overall: 82.75%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7tk-WZSqIGQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This British animation, which sees Father Christmas\u2019 hapless son put in charge of delivering the world\u2019s presents on Christmas Eve, received rave reviews on release.<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s not quite on the level of <em>Elf <\/em>in terms of popularity, we can see this becoming a modern classic over the next decade or so.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>6. Trading Places<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Overall: 83%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v9JcJgXATU8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In<em> Trading Places<\/em>, Christmas acts as the backdrop to a dramatic life-swap between a high-flying stockbroker (Dan Aykroyd) and a down-on-his-luck street hustler (Eddie Murphy) as part of a bet by two scheming brothers.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re sick of Christmas schmaltz but still want to watch something relatively festive, this is the perfect option.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>5. A Christmas Story<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Overall : 86.5%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cfjEZ88NHBw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>A Christmas Story <\/em>follows little Ralphie Parker as he pesters his mom, teacher and a mall Santa for a Red Ryder BB gun, which they won\u2019t buy for him as he\u2019ll \u201cshoot his eye out\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n<p>The film is on near permanent rotation on US TV, becoming a favourite for its warm-hearted yet slightly dark sense of humour.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>4. Miracle on 34<sup>th<\/sup> Street (1947)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Overall: 89.5%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kUwyGo6PQzY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Not to be confused with the 1994 remake (which scored significantly less), <em>Miracle on 34<sup>th<\/sup> Street <\/em>tells the story of a Macy\u2019s Santa, Kris Kringle, who claims to be the real deal.<\/p>\n<p>Although not everyone believes him, the presence of Santa has a profound effect on New York City \u201d\u201c culminating in a trial to determine whether or not Kris really is the big man.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>3. Die Hard<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Overall: 90%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2TQ-pOvI6Xo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The biggest risk most people face at their office Christmas party is making a complete fool of themselves and potentially damaging company property.<\/p>\n<p>Pity the poor employees of Nakatomi Corporation then. Their festive soiree comes to abrupt end when a group of terrorists, led by Hans Gruber (played by Alan Rickman at his villainous best), breaks in and promptly takes them all hostage.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, one of the employees is married to John McClane (Bruce Willis) \u201d\u201c a hard-as-nails New York cop with a fine taste in vests who just so happens to be visiting at the time. Yippee-ki-yay!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>2. The Nightmare Before Christmas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Overall: 90.25%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wr6N_hZyBCk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>The Nightmare Before Christmas <\/em>is set in Halloweentown, ruled by the charismatic Pumpkin King Jack Skellington. After another year of successful Halloween celebrations, a melancholy Jack stumbles upon Christmastown and immediately falls in love. He decides to take control of the holiday in goodwill, but things soon take a turn for the worse.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s some debate over whether <em>Nightmare<\/em> is actually a Christmas film or not, but we think so and so do the critics; they rated Tim Burton and Henry Sellick\u2019s legendary stop motion as the second best Christmas movie of all time.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>1.
