Luke, a stage director, aged 45, is going through his deceased grandmother's (Constance's) belongings and finds letters from Jessica spanning fifteen years and ending a month previously. Jessica, 45 years younger than Constance, was a successful actress until she was injured in a train crash and left with a limp. She then became a book illustrator. Luke falls in love with her through her letters, finds out she's living in Seattle and intends to introduce himself as Constance's grandson.
