Double bill of gritty Brazilian film dramas based on actual events. Using street kids straight from the Cidade de Deus slum outside Rio de Janeiro, 'City of God' (2002) revolves around Buscape (Alexandre Rodrigues), a street kid who decides to become a photojournalist when he discovers he is not cut out to become a villain in the shadowy world of drugs and violence. Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino) has grown up to become a natural-born-killer and is attempting to take over the drugs trade of the city. However, this sparks a turf war which is photographed by Buscape, making the war famous. 'City of Men' (2007) follows the fortunes of two 18-year-olds as they struggle to find a life for themselves amidst the drug-funded warfare of Rio's slums. Although not related, Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) and Acerola (Douglas Silva) have grown up together as brothers, but now as they enter adulthood, their friendship will be tested to the limits as they both fight the grim survival statistics. Both have separate priorities; Laranjinha needs to re-establish contact with his unknown father, nearing parole after killing a man; while Acerola is under pressure to support his young family. As the pair try to deal with their new responsibilities, the ever-present threat of an all-out gang war threatens to erupt, testing the childhood friends' resolve to the limit.
