Ian Hirst is Professor of Finance at Herriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. He has an M.A degree from Oxford University, an MBA from Cornell, and a PhD from the University of Chicago. He has teaching experience at universities in the UK, the US and Australia.
Professor Hirst has considerable experience in teaching project appraisal on MBA programmes to students working as managers in a wide variety of industries. By setting coursework assignments that involved applying modern appraisal methods to current corporate projects, Professor Hirst has learned a great deal about the practical problems of implementing appraisal techniques. The emphases in this briefings on the problems of identifying relevant cash flows, and the importance of including the broader implications of accepting a project (even if they are hard to quantify), are partly a result of this experience.
Professor Hirst is the author of several texts and academic journal articles on project appraisal and other finance topics, including a monograph on "Business Investment Decisions". He teaches a CIMA Mastercourse on Capital Investment Appraisal, and has advised leading companies on their appraisal methods and procedures.
