The story of a mother's search for her missing adult daughter, and the desperate measures that daughter will take to stay missing.
Miranda crashes her car late at night on a lonely highway. She is picked up by a stranger who, very quickly, is revealed to have other plans for her. But no one knows Miranda is missing. Her father, a CIA pilot, died in mysterious circumstances over Central America in the eighties. And she and Anne, her mother, have lost touch.
Then Anne contacts her daughter. No one has heard of her for two months; it seems unlikely that Anne will find her alive. But she is, and maybe she doesn't want to be found. Maybe George, her highway rescuer, means nothing by his unexplained appearances, and is unconnected to rumours of a serial killer stalking young women. Maybe her mother will find her in time.
Maybe not.
