Born Adele d'Osmond, the daughter of a lady-in-waiting in Louis XVI's court, Madame de Boigne (1781-1866) was raised in the intimacy of the French royal family. She was an opinionated insider, fearlessly commenting on her tumultuous world - both publicly and privately. Her memoirs begin with her childhood at Versailles, continues through her flight to Italy, then England, and a return to France and her father's ambassadorship of Turin. It concludes with her account of Napoleon's arrival in Paris, and her father's appointment as ambassador to London.
