On October 9, 1956, in Paris, Grard Philipe went to Studio Le Fagon, to engrave what would become the reference version of the musical tale written and composed by Serguei Prokofiev in 1936, shortly after his definitive return to the Soviet Union. The first public rendition directed by the composer took place on May 2, 1936 at Nezlobin Theater in Moscow. With this recording, coupled with Marcel Tillard's original drawings, Grard Philipe offered Le Chant du Monde the greatest commercial success of its history. It is estimated that more than one million copies have been sold since publication.
