Robert Redford stars as Bill Bryson in this adaptation of the travel writer's memoirs. After spending ten years in England, Bryson feels adventure calling and decides to return to his American homeland to hike the 2,200 mile-long Appalachian Trail. Despite his wife (Emma Thompson)'s concerned objections, he embarks upon the gruelling journey with the only person that would join him, his old friend, recovering alcoholic and long-time philanderer Katz (Nick Nolte). Although Bill sought out the tranquility of nature, Katz's presence ruins his best intentions and the differing pair find themselves up against the many dangers lurking in their harsh surroundings.
