The titles in this series look at explorers whose discoveries helped change the world, and together they chart the course of 1000 years of seafaring, exploration and discovery. Each book describes the background to these journeys, focusing on the economic pressures and technological advances which made them possible. The books also examine the native societies that the explorers encountered, and assess the impact of their discoveries at home and abroad.;"Dr Livingstone I presume?" With these famous words, Stanley greeted Livingstone in Ujiju, beside Lake Tanganika, Africa, in 1871. Although their names are now linked by history, these two explorers spent only a few months in each other's company. They were very different characters - Livingstone was a missionary-turned-explorer who campaigned against the slave trade in eastern Africa; Stanley was a journalist and opportunist who helped set up the Congo Free State for the Belgian king, Leopold II. This book tells the story of their lives, the famous meeting, and both men's explorations through Africa.
