A sequel to The Bosun's Secret following the story of Nat Thomas, the sailor-cadet, who finds himself in trouble once again when he meets his old enemy, the cruel Bosun Willett who has escaped from prison and is leading a band of smugglers on the Pembrokeshire coast; for 8-11 year old readers.
Carradice writes thrillingly about the adventures of Nat Thomas and his fellow sailors on board the Polly.
In this sequel to The Bosun?s Secret, set in 1872, Nat has spent two years learning his sailing skills and is ready to put them into practice.
The historical details are interesting, and the descriptions of a storm at sea, of the heaving life of naval shipbuilding on Pembroke Dockyard, and of the fort on Thorne Island are vivid.
It is, however, in the confrontation between Nat and his arch-enemy Bosun Willett that the most hair-raising excitement lies.
Carradice has made no attempt to make his protagonists sound Victorian.
They are young people of today in their speech and their actions, which makes for a pacey, exciting read.
There is even a touch of romance to round things off nicely.
A jolly good yarn!
