John Ford directs this adaptation of Irvin S. Cobb's short stories featuring the Confederate Judge Priest. Forty years after the Civil War, Priest (Charles Winninger) still has trouble quelling his Confederate spirit in his role as judge in the Kentuckian town of Fairfield. His sentiments involve him in romantic entanglements and racial issues which could hinder his attempts at re-election.
