A guidebook to winter climbs in Scotland's Cairngorms, Lochnagar and Creag Meaghaidh. This eagerly awaited fifth edition has been completely updated by the author - climber and instructor Allen Fyffe. The major climbing areas in the Cairngorms provide some of the finest winter climbing in Britain. From the remote corries of Braeriach and Beinn a'Bhuird to the magnificent cliffs of Lochnagar and Creag an Dubh Loch and the readily accessible Northern corries of Cairngorm, every aspect of winter climbing is to be found. There are long, varied routes and short technical test-pieces; there are pure ice climbs and buttress and mixed routes to rival any in the country. Building on previous editions of the guide a selection of the best routes in each area has been suggested. Where possible a selection of routes of all grades have been given with, where there is a choice, a few routes at around the same standard to allow for some choice should conditions or availability dictate a change. When weather, conditions and climb are right, the Cairngorms can offer an unforgettable experience.

Here's what you say about us...

Allen Fyffe has been an active mountaineer for over 35 years. During much of that time he has been an instructor and guide, and is now the Executive Secretary of the Scottish Mountain Leader Training Board. He has been involved in every aspect of mountaineering and climbing in Scotland, and has done more than 200 new routes in both summer and winter. In the Alps Allen made the first British ascent of the North Face of Les Droites and the first winter ascent of the Central Spur of Les Courtes. In the Himalaya he made a two- man first ascent of the South-West Flank of Kalanka and the Scottish Pillar on Bhagirathi III. He has also been a member of expeditions to Dhaulaghiri IV, Everest South-West Face and North-East Ridge, Meru and Broad Peak. Along with Iain Peter he made an early ascent of Khan Tengri in the Tein Shan and the first British ascent of Pik Pobeda, and also wrote the highly acclaimed Handbook of Climbing. Allen has also climbed in Canada, Peru and on the big walls in California's Yosemite Valley.
