The book provides an account of the lives and experiences of a group of female intravenous drug users in Glasgow.
Based on participant observations of the women in their own setting and in-depth interviews, it is the first full ethnographic account of the lifestyle of female drug users.
It charts their entry into drugs, the various ways in which they provide for their drug use, their relationships with friends, partners, family members, and children as well asattitudes towards professionals such as social workers with whom they come into contact by virtue of their status as drug-using mothers.
Finally, the efforts the women make to give up their use of drugs is examined, along with the reasons which make these endeavours difficult.
The evidence suggeststhat, ironically, the lifestyle which evolves around their use of drugs offers an arena in which the women are able to find a degree of independence and purpose otherwise lacking in their lives and which makes their drug-using lifestyle attractive even when disadvantages become apparent.

Here's what you say about us...

'This is an extremely interesting and academically rigorous book ... The book is well organized and accessible ... this book will be useful to both academics and social workers, as a comprehensive ethnographic study and a window into the world of women drug users.'
Jan Keene, British Journal of Social Work

'Her report is a sympathetic dissection of the sad, seedy world of 'career' addicts ... fascinating.'
Jane Fowler, The Scotsman

'welcome contribution to the subject ... The book is well organised ... a useful and interesting account which brings the issue of gender to the foreground and may well serve to encourage more extensive research on drug use in which gender is centrally integrated into the framework of the analysis.'
Roger Matthews, Criminal Justice Matters

`Avril Taylor must be congratulated on having produced a comprehensive and informative book on women's drug use which, though academically sound, avoids the academic jargon and contortion of much recent feminist work and keeps rhetoric to a minimum ... it thoroughly reviews the literature and is clearly written and fully referenced ... the best book on female drug use to appear in this country for some time.'
DRUGLINK

`In chapters that are replete with well-chosen (and highly articulate) quotations, Taylor covers admirably the critical aspects of the drug careers of her sample ... The book is timely and makes a valuable contribution to our current state of knowledge ... Taylor's summary of the issues surrounding motherhood is confident and compelling.'
Addiction

An account of the lives and experiences of a group of female intravenous drug users in Glasgow.
It is a highly readable text ... This book should be included in a wider range of reading lists than those strictly pertaining to criminology courses.
British Journal of Criminology
