The first English-language edition of a major work by George Sand, originally published (in French) in 1841, Horace is remarkable as perhaps the only nineteenth-century novel in which the heroine is a fallen woman who is not punished.

George Sand, whose real name was Baroness Amandine Aurore-Lucie Dupin Dedevant, was born in 1804 and became one of the most prominent writers of nineteenth-century France. Although today a large part of her fame centers on her life
her love affairs with Chopin, Musset, and Marie Dorval, wearing men's clothes, and smoking cigars
she was hailed as a major artist during her time.
