1930s drama based on Eugene O'Neill's play about a man who escapes from prison and goes onto become an emperor in the Caribbean. After committing murder over a gambling dispute, African-American Brutus Jones (Paul Robeson) is sent to jail. He breaks out of prison and takes a job on a ship that's bound for the Caribbean, where he schemes his way to the position of emperor on a remote island, much to the detriment of the natives who later revolt.
