Bargello, also known as Florentine work, dates from the 17th century, and is a canvaswork craft worked in wools or silks. It is characterised by parallel lines of straight stitches in 'wave', 'flame' or similar formations. Part of the beauty of bargello lies in the simplicity of the stitch. The repeat patterns build into stunning designs which often have a three-dimensional effect.
The book includes 34 stitch patterns, incorporating colour photographs, charts and instructions, providing a mixture of traditional and contemporary designs to suit all tastes. Advice is given on suitable canvas, needles and choosing yarn, and suggestions are given for applications of the finished bargello pieces.
Frances Salter is a canvaswork enthusiast who for many years ran the WHI Tapestry shop in London. Her knowledge of the craft both from personal experience and from that of her customers puts her in an ideal position to write this book.
