When is a cover shooter not really a cover shooter? When it's Outriders.

On the surface, this co-op shooter is a little old school. The cover system (and colour palette) feel a bit like Gears of War - no surprise, really, given that developer People Can Fly made 2013's Gears of War: Judgment. It has that same cool, grim and gritty sci-fi feel. But then, there's the loot system that's reminiscent of Borderlands, the inventory that has the feel of Destiny and shooting mechanics with a vibe of The Division.

More important than all of that, though, are the abilities that Outriders liberally offers up. Take the Devastator class - it enables you to pound the ground for an earthquake effect, jump up and teleport to an enemy for a powerful blow and catch bullets to throw them back. That's just one class. And using abilities like this heals you. AND the cooldown on them is pretty short. Beyond that, mods offer a ton of options for fine-tuning your character, allowing you to get deep into the weeds on stats and give yourself some spectacular weaponry effects such as singularities that deliver splash damage when you deliver a killshot.

So yes, sure, you could lurk behind cover and take your shots from there like you're supposed to, but why would you when you can run around being an awesome space warrior badass?
