Description

The sidescrolling beat-'em-up is bicep-deep in a mini-renaissance right now, with the likes of Final Vendetta, Fight'n Rage, Streets of Rage 4, Mayhem Brawler, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge and River City Girls nostalgically evoking the brawlers of the '80s and '90s. Now Young Souls is joining the charge, although it's doing its bit to modernise the genre too. You play as twins Jenn and Tristan, a pair of teenagers who were adopted by a kindly professor, only to have him kidnapped by evil goblins. If you're getting a whiff of high fantasy, well... yes, there are goblins, but they're more the product of weird experiments and secret underground business than wizards and whatnot. While the world is strange and murderous, the story is quite wholesome in places, but what you're really showing up for is to bash the living daylights out of an array of monstrous baddies. Surrounding a satisfying core of beat-'em-up mechanics are a host of RPG mechanics and a bit of metroidvania-style exploration. You need to work your own way through a host of magical dungeons linked through a magic gateway in your basement. You'll gather up runes of power to charge the gateway up, but to get your hands on them you'll have to murder a lot of monsters. While you're not bashing baddies you can visit town, going shopping or hitting the gym to upgrade your abilities and weapons. It's a fun gameplay loop that breaks up the combat and builds on genre traditions. So, while Young Souls is certainly a loving homage to the classics that came before it, it also builds on those classics to create something that feels fresh in the 21st century.
