Triple bill of thrillers. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu directs '21 Grams' (2003). Shot mainly with a hand-held camera, and following a non-linear plot line, the film captures the immediacy and confusion of the moments before, during and after a horrific accident that causes the lives of three disparate people to become interwined. Sean Penn plays Paul Rivers, a mathematics teacher facing up to his pending death from a heart problem, while his distant wife Mary (Charlotte Gainsbourg) hopes to become pregnant from artificial insemination. Naomi Watts is Cristina, mother of two little girls, who has overcome a drug-dependent past to achieve a stable, happy marriage and family life. Benicio del Toro plays Jack Jordan, an ex-criminal who has now found Jesus and is struggling to provide for his wife and their two children in a poor area of the town. When tragedy strikes, all three characters must re-evaluate their lives in the face of death. The title refers to the 21 grams a person loses at the moment of death, believed by some to be the weight of the human soul. 'Ronin' (1998) follows the actions of a group of five mercenaries who hire their expert skills out to the highest bidder. Sam (Robert De Niro) is an ex-CIA man, Vincent (Jean Reno) a French operative, Spence (Sean Bean) a weapons expert, Gregor (Stellan Skarsgard) an ex-KGB electronics wizard and Larry (Skip Sudduth) a driver. Contacted via Irish revolutionary Deirdre (Natascha McElhone) by an unseen employer, the group is hired to steal a well-guarded briefcase. The mission succeeds, but divisions within the team soon result in treachery and betrayal. In 'The Usual Suspects' (1995) a burnt-out ship containing 27 dead bodies has been discovered in a Los Angeles harbour. US customs agent Dave Kujal (Chazz Palminteri) is working on the case, and thinks his best chance is to interrogate the one survivor of the shipboard massacre, 'Verbal' Kint (Kevin Spacey). Sitting in an office at police headquarters, Kint begins to tell his story, and the more he says, the more Kujal becomes convinced that the semi-mythical master criminal Keyser Soze is the man behind it all.
