Cornel Wilde portrays Polish composer Frdric Chopin in this dramatisation of his life directed by Charles Vidor. The film follows Chopin from child prodigy to prominent musical figure. Under the tutelage of Professor Joseph Elsner (Paul Muni) Chopin's talents excel but his patriotism gets him in trouble with a Russian govenor and he leaves his homeland for Paris, never to return. While there he meets and becomes romatically involved with writer George Sand (Merle Oberon) who proves to be an inspiration for his work. He continues composing despite his declining health which ultimately ends in an early death at the age of 39.
