A portrait of Venetian composer Luigi Nono (1924-1991), seen through the eyes of two musicians, Claudio Abbado and Maurizio Pollini, who forged a close personal and musical relationship with him. Nono, a composer whose works were rarely performed in Italy, partly as a result of his strong communist and anti-fascist beliefs, provides a revealing insight into the philosophy shared by all three musicians and the influences they have had on each other. The documentary is centred on two of Nono's key works: his piano work 'Sofferte onde serene' and the suite from his later orchestral work 'Prometeo', performed in rehearsal by the Berlin Philharmonic with Claudio Abbado. Interviews, quotations, rehearsal excerpts and footage of Nono's home city of Venice paint a fascinating and moving portrait of the friendship between these three artists - a friendship that has had a unique impact on the world of music today.
