The lapse of eighteen years, with the usual accompaniment of decided Cases and Statutes, has rendered the labour of preparing a Second Edition somewhat great; and as the work has necessarily been done at various intervals during several years, I feel conscious that it is only too probable that errors may have crept in. I can but submit the result to the Profession, in the hope that it will be as kindly received as the First Edition. It has been, of course, necessary to deal, to some extent, with the Conveyancing Acts, the Settled Land Acts, and the Married Women's Property Act, but they are introduced only so far as they bear on the subject-matter of the book. I do not profess to have attempted to write a treatise on these Acts.
I wish to express the warmest acknowledgment of gratitude to my friend, Mr. W. R. Sheldon, for his untiring assistance; without his industry and energy the delay in publishing this Second Edition would have been even greater than it is.
