An autobiographical story about vet-turned novelist James Herriot's first few years in Yorkshire during the 1930s. James (Simon Ward) arrives as a newly qualified vet at a tiny Yorkshire village to assist eccentric vet Siegfried Farnon (Anthony Hopkins). Together they struggle to overcome the mistrust of the local farmers, who are used to doing things their way, and James falls for a pretty local girl (Lisa Harrow). The books and this film spawned a television series that was to last through to the 1980s.
