Printing is perhaps the greatest invention that ever was made. Another cycle ofa thousand years of darkness would have gone round, when mankind shook offthe barbarism of the middle ages, if in tellectual light had not been shed abroad by the mighty enginery of the press. Yet, a Grand Vizier ordered the types and presses which were first brought to Constantino ple, to be thrown into the sea, lest the introduction of them should starve all the scribes, who earned a livelihood by the tardy process ofcopying manuscripts. This was an in eident of a moment, rendered memorable and Spirit stirring.
