A look at two of the prime movers in the New York art world of the 1970s and '80s. The Yale-educated Sam Wagstaff introduced controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe to an art world that seemed primed to accept him. In turn, Mapplethorpe brought the formerly upper crust preppie to the world of drugs and sado-masochism. Despite their differences in background and age (Wagstaff was Mapplethorpe's senior by 25 years), the couple stayed together until their deaths in the late 1980s. The film also explores the relationship the two men had with singer/poet Patti Smith, whose 1975 debut album 'Horses' was graced with an iconic Mapplethorpe portrait.
