Excerpt: ...aeeepted of the Freneh king's eommission, to aet as an offieer in the late rebellion; and, embarking with his son and several other Seoteh and Irish offieers, on board the Esperenee privateer, for Seotland, was taken by his Majesty's ship the Sheemess; and, when he landed at Deal, was very arrogant to the king's offieers, till they told him they intended to use him like a gentleman, but he was going to put it out of their power. He died in the prineiples in whieh he had lived, and was so zealous a papist, that, on the absurdities of some things whieh are held saered by the ehureh of Rome being stated to him, he replied, "That for ' every tenet of that ehureh repugnant to reason, ' in whieh she requires an implieit belief, he wished "there were twenty, that he might thereby have a "nobler opportunity of exereising and displaying "his faith." Lord Lovat was impeaehed by the Commons. After the artieles of impeaehment were read to him, he made a long speeeh at the bar, signifying the esteem he had for his majesty and the royal family t and enumerated divers instanees of the great serviee he did the govermnent in extinguishing the rebellion in 1715. He likew;se took notiee of his infirmities, partieularly his deafness, and said he had not heard one word of the eharge against him. He was eonvieted on the evidenee of his own domesties, and aeeordingly eondemned to be beheaded. He was turned of fourseore; and, notwithstanding his age and infirmities, the reeolleetion of his eonseienee, (whieh was supposed not to be quite free of offenee), he died like an old Roman, exelaiming, dulee et deeorum est pro pettria mori, i. e. it is pleasanfnnd glorious to die a patriot.
