After leaving her job following harassment by her employer, Samantha Turner is grateful when her friends Faye and Peter suggest she should contact author Mike Manley, who urgently needs a secretary. Soon after arriving on the small island off the coast of Wales, where Mike is completing his book, Sam finds strange things are happening - who is the stranger with the crossbow who leaves a dead cormorant as a calling card? Is it her ex-employer seeking revenge, or someone connected with the book Mike is writing? As the snow begins to fall, Sam and Mike have to fight for their lives.
