The following remarks apply to the Definite Article 6 % To: --1. If a Substantive is seen without the Article, it is Indefinite, as iir7roc, a horse; if the Article stands before it, as 6 t-mrog, it is ' the horse; 'as, 6 vtaviag ZzcnroTriv ex, the young man has a master.' 2. The Article however is used, though not necessarily translated in English, before a. Proper names standing alone--i.e. not having any other noun in apposition, as--6 'AAKijSiaSijc, Alcibiades. b. Nouns denoting material, as--6 xpvabg, gold. c. Abstract nouns, as--fi ipiXia, friendship. 3. In construing a sentence, if you see two Substantives in the Nominative Case, take as the Nominative to the Verb the Substantive which has the Article--the other will be the Nominative Case after the Verb tari or iyivero, as the case may be, as--fi vv rifiipa. iykvcTo, the night became day. 4. When the Article stands before both nouns, either may be taken first, as--fi apcrri kdTi To dyadbv, Virtue is the chief good, or the chief good is virtue. 5. When a Substantive, having the Article, has also an Adjective to be taken with it, the proper place for the Article is before the Adjective, as--6 ayadog arjjp, the good man. 6 aviijp ayaObg, meaning the man is good; ayaOog being the Nominative Case after karl understood. 6. The Article used before the Infinitive Mood, or before a Participle, turns it into a noun, as--To ouxppovelv, i.e...."
