If you look up 'wholesome gaming' in the dictionary... well, you probably won't find it. If you Google the phrase, however, you might well find yourself on a page for Giraffe and Annika. Hailing from Japanese indie studio Atelier Mimina, the game blends exploration, platforming, dungeon solving and puzzling with a huge, sweet-smelling pile of charm. You play as Annika, a girl with cat ears and a tail who wakes with amnesia on Spica Island. After a brief investigation of the house you wake in, you meet a boy called Giraffe. This young lad, as it happens, needs some help collecting star fragments from a series of dungeons that he can't get into. But guess who can? As you make your way around the island you'll play through a series of dungeons littered with puzzles that need solving and platforms that need jumping on. This is a gentle game with little in the way of combat but a fair bit by way of ghosts that need avoiding, not to mention plenty of collectibles to be found and locals to help out. No combat doesn't mean no bosses, however - each dungeon has a boss to be defeated, and you can do that by completing a series of rhythm-based challenges. The overall effect is rather like taking a lovely warm bath. Giraffe and Annika is a cosy, warm romp full of good vibes.
