Description

Persona 5 is, as the title kind of gives away, the fifth instalment in the Persona series. That's pretty good going for any series, but especially impressive for what started as a spin-off of the Megami Tensei franchise. More impressive still - over half a decade after the original version, there's still life in it thanks to Persona 5 Royal, a beefed-up version on modern consoles. The game takes place in a real-world Tokyo, but one that's (as far as we know) a little different to the one you might have visited. As well as having a pretty standard high school life, the heroes of Persona have supernatural adventures thanks to their power to enter the hearts of others. In Persona 5 the Phantom Thieves, our game's heroes, attempt to help the world by stealing ill intent from the hearts of adults, using manifestations of their psyches called personas. The game brings together role-playing elements with social simulation, a hefty dose of dungeon exploration and, as players have come to expect, plenty of weirdness. A day/night cycle dictates whether you'll be getting on with social stuff (daytime) or the stranger stuff (night time), but whether you're stalking through dungeons or developing relationships with your classmates, it all feeds back together into a deep, weird experience that could only have come out of a Japanese development studio. With this Royal version, players get a new Phantom Thief member named Kasumi Yoshizawa, a playable third semester, a new palace, a new area of the city and a host of smaller additions such as new music and sociable elements. If you're new to the game, this is the meatiest version yet. If you've played before, well... there might just be enough here to tempt you back.
