Following its maiden flight in September 1942 the B-29 was assigned to the Pacific arena, going into action against Japan in the last two months of 1944. In August 1945 it was the B-29s 'Enola Gay' and 'Bock's Car' which dropped the first atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
