Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance takes place in the world of Abeir-Toril - the phrase meaning 'Cradle of Life' - a world known commonly by the shortened name Toril. Your exploits in Dark Alliance will revolve around Baldur's Gate, a port city on the winding Chionthar River.

Baldur's Gate is a place recently plagued by a growing evil. Members of the city watch have been found dead, the townsfolk are afraid to leave their homes, and unsettling rumours of a thieves' guild civil war beneath the streets runs rampant through the city's taverns.

Your arrival has placed you in the middle of this cauldron of danger. You are a young hero, new to Baldur's Gate, and a freshman in the world of adventuring. You're carrying not much more than a blade and a small purse of coins and you've come to the big city to seek your fortune. That is, as long as the unpleasantness that is engulfing Baldur's Gate doesn't claim you first.
