In the distant future the powers that be have thought, 'you know what teenagers don't have enough of? Hormones.' And, to be fair, superpowers. A psionic hormone has been discovered that gives people special psychic abilities. Just as humans were getting to grips with this, however, the mutant Others descended from the heavens, hungry for brains and very resistant to conventional attacks. Fortunately, the former offered a solution to the latter and the Other Suppression Force (OSF) was born. In Scarlet Nexus you play as Yuito Sumeragi, a new recruit to the OSF, and your job is to engage in some very powered-up hack 'n' slash combat to defend the world. What's interesting about this combat scheme is how your party comes into play. They can lend you their abilities, so one second you'll be facing off against an Other with a flaming sword, then you're suddenly darting around with a teleport mechanic, then you're spurting electricity everywhere. It's dizzying stuff, and it only gets deeper when you factor in your own deep skill tree. There's another side to the game too, though, and it's basically knocking about with your mates and getting social. A significant portion of the game is given over to advancing its weird science fictional plotline but also just chatting about things like gyozas and protein supplements with your pals. Aside from it being straight-up fun there is a point to this social side of the game - it develops your bonds with the other characters, helping you when you're out in the field and need to combine superspeed with telekinesis. Scarlet Nexus is a strange, beautiful package that will hit a real sweet spot for a lot of anime fans.
