There might have been roughly a million Tales games since 1995's Tales of Phantasia on the SNES, but fans have been waiting half a decade for this one. Tales of Arise marks the series' debut on the new generation of consoles, and a great opportunity for newcomers to jump in for some slightly barmy high fantasy anime action. The Renans have ruled over the planet of Dahna for 300 years, stripping it of resources and keeping its people enslaved. This tale begins with two people, Alphen and Shionne, born on different worlds but thrust together by fate to face the tyranny of the Renans. On the combat front, the game mixes traditional JRPG encounters and stats with real-time action-based combat - another factor that makes it a great entry point for newcomers. Standard attacks are complemented by special skills known as 'artes', but you can only pull off a few of those before your skill metre runs down and needs a recharge. Tales of Arise isn't exactly restrained, though, and there's plenty of scope to juggle enemies across the screen in spectacular airborne attacks if that's your thing. You can put any character in the lead, which means magic, swords or even guns can come into play. It's gloriously over the top stuff, which basically fits the game's overall fun, melodramatic tone. Tales fans have been waiting half a decade for this one, and they're unlikely to be disappointed.
