Description

Fishing simulation meets the unfathomable existential horror of H.P. Lovecraft in Dredge, a strange and interesting high conceptual mash-up of ideas. The game begins with your stone-faced skipper piloting his 19th century trawler through impenetrable fog only to get wrecked on the first of many forbidding outcrops of rock you'll find in Dredge. You wash up in Greater Marrow, a town on Dredge's foggy archipelago that is, fortunately, looking for a fisherman. From there you'll explore Dredge's network of islands, trawling for standard fare such as squid, red snappers and eels. Sometimes, though, you'll pull up a catch that's a fair bit weirder - an octopus with heads on the end of its tentacles, for example. There's an upside to these strange denizens of the deep, though - the locals will pay more for them, helping you to upgrade your boat and equipment. One interesting mechanic is the way in which you have to stack your boat with your haul. Everything has to fit into a boat-shaped grid, which also has to accommodate things like your engine. It's a little like actively trying to stack a Tetris grid, and once you fill it you'll need to unload. Alongside the more conventional fishing sim gameplay, however, you'll undertake quests for the townsfolk and slowly unpick the mystery of this uncanny place and the dark powers that haunt it... This Complete Edition serves up additional helpings of dread thanks to The Iron Rig, which gives you a new constructable town to muck around with; The Pale Reach, a chilling new island to explore; and Blackstone Key, which gives you access to a mysterious workshop housing otherworldly creations, products of cruel machinations by the previous occupants, now yours to use as you see fit.
