When she realizes the money other people have contributed is running low, she becomes involved with the Kill Club, a fan club obsessed with the Day family murders. They believe Libby's brother, who has spent the past 25 years in prison for the murders, may be innocent. This sends Libby on an intriguing quest to uncover the truth. Telling the tale from multiple perspectives, Flynn explores life in rural America, in a small town rife with poverty, misery, and secrets. Flynn's use of prose is compelling, and her characters are realistic, though at times unlikeable. Dark Places is a dark novel that may not be to everyone's taste, but it offers an intriguing premise heavily influenced by the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980s and works such as Truman Capote's In Cold Blood.
