Description

Mashing The Legend of Zelda up with other gaming franchises is on its way to becoming a tradition for Nintendo. First we had the Hyrule Warriors games that blended Zelda with Koei Tecmo's hack 'n' slash Warriors games and now we have Cadence of Hyrule, which crosses the series over with the indie darling Crypt of the NecroDancer. In a nutshell, you get the characters and world of The Legend of Zelda combined with the rhythm-based gameplay of Crypt of the Necromancer. Players make their way across an overworld that takes in iconic Zelda locations such as Hyrule Castle or Death Mountain, dipping into dungeons for a good old crawl as they go. There are elements of Crypt of the Necromancer's procedural generation in that the overworld is generated differently for each new save file, while the dungeons will be different every single time. It's once you're engaged in combat, however, that you'll really notice Crypt of the Necromancer's influence. It's rhythm-based, meaning that players have to attack in time with the game's music using the Switch's directional buttons, amassing bonus multipliers and other rewards by keeping the beat. As you go you can amass weapons and equipment that will help you explore, but beware - Cadence of Hyrule also has a touch of roguelike play, so you'll lose any rupees and temporary objects you have if you die. The music is, of course, key. It's also a treat for longtime Zelda fans, with classic themes remixed on keyboard and drums. Cadence of Hyrule is a fresh take on a venerable old series - here's hoping Nintendo finds more fun games to remix Zelda with.
