Bridges celebrates the technical and artistic achievements in the creation, design, engineering, construction, and social history of more than 100 great bridges from around the world. Organised chronologically to follow the stages in the development of bridge construction, each chapter has an introduction, followed by in-depth consideration of specially chosen exemplary bridges. "Vital statistics" are given for each bridge discussed, such as location, date of construction, designer, materials, dimensions, and so on, accompanied by an account of the creation of the bridge, including difficulties overcome, hardships, and disasters endured, solutions conceived, and innovations refined and perfected to provide the basis for future progress. The final chapter moves on to the dawn of the new millennium examining the latest, ground-breaking designs and unbuilt projects.
