Steve Nicholson is Professor of 20th-Century and Contemporary Theatre, and Director of Drama, in the School of English at the University of Sheffield. He has been teaching and researching in Universities for over thirty years, was a founding member of the White Horse Travelling Theatre and is a series editor for the Performance Studies series from UEP.
Much of his work explores relationships between theatre, society and political contexts, and he has a strong interest in contemporary playwrights and practitioners who challenge traditional conventions about character, narrative and performance.
He is the author of the award-winning four-volume history of twentieth century theatre censorship under the Lord Chamberlain, The Censorship of British Drama 1900-1968 Volumes One-Four, published by UEP. Other books include Modern British Playwriting: the 1960s (Methuen, 2012) and British Theatre and the Red Peril: The Portrayal of Communism, 1917-1945 (UEP, 1999).
