Set in Bamian, the region of Afghanistan where the Taliban blew up the massive statues of the Buddha in 2001, this film looks at modern Afghani life from the perspective of a six-year-old girl. Under Taliban rule, girls were not allowed to attend school, but this has changed since the deposition of their harsh regime - and when six-year-old Baktay (Nikbakht Noruz) is challenged to go to school by her neighbour's son, she is determined to overcome the obstacles that stand in her way. As she goes along, she is tormented by older boys whose games mimic the terrible violence they witnessed under the Taliban. The film was directed by Hana Makhmalbaf, daughter of acclaimed Iranian filmmakers Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Marzieh Meshkini, while still in her teens.
